Affirmations: should I use them & do they work?
The simple answer to this question is yes. But if you are reading this, I believe what you really want to know is why affirmations are effective. The best way to understand this is to look at a form of external affirmations that are working all around you........ Marketing.
The goal of marketing is to
-
increase brand awareness
-
attract potential customers who may be interested in your product or service,
-
boost sales and revenue, and
-
establish brand loyalty.
So why is this relevant? Well, let's take a step back and define what an affirmation is. An affirmation is a simple statement of intent that is repeated regularly with the purpose of shifting mindset and thinking patterns.
Now that we understand what an affirmation is we can use an example to help illustrate the connection it has to marketing.
Let’s use the affirmation, “I am brave.” This affirmation is used by our subject who we will call Jane. Jane says, “I am brave.” in order to facilitate, or better yet promote a go getter attitude in the face of resistance. She repeats this phrase to herself multiple times throughout the day. Now, it is all about perspective. Jane doesn't just become brave; she must sell the idea to herself first. This brings us full circle to our four marketing concepts.
-
Increasing brand awareness = Repetition of the affirmation
-
Attracting customers = Attracting yourself
-
Boosting sales = You choosing to follow through
-
Establishing brand loyalty = Belief gained thorough your continuous follow through of your new standard
When a marketer wants to increase brand awareness, they must get that brand's image and message in front of as many eyes as possible and as often as possible. When the time arises to make a purchasing decision, they will remember that brand. In the case of Jane, when it is time to face any form of resistance, instead of the old mental sales pitches of, I am nervous, I am not ready, or I am not worthy, she remembers and purchases, “I am brave.”
Some of you may have already noticed this. The speaking of the affirmation only satisfies the concept of brand awareness and attracting customers (yourself). But boosting sales is synonymous to taking action on behalf of your affirmation. And brand loyalty is only obtained through…. Loyalty. So, I will leave you with this. Affirmations do work but they only represent half of the equation. The affirmation brings awareness to your mind, but if you do not act on that affirmation when it is time then your affirmation just becomes an overplayed ad in your algorithm.
